The Marks and Spencer permanent company archive, housed within the newly constructed Michal Marks building on the Western campus of the University of Leeds, has been completed with Darnton EGS acting as architect.
Designed and constructed to BS5454 the M&S company archive houses exhibition space, learning, seminar and research areas as well as supporting offices and hospitality. Located within the city to where M&S trace their roots, the archive provides a fantastic facility available for students, business and the public alike to study retail trends over the past 125 years.
Key design elements included electronically operated archive roller racking, including integrated lighting, fire and leak detection systems as well as an environmentally controlled chamber to maintain an operating temperature of four degrees centigrade. Planned launch to the general public is March 2012.
